'The Voice usa' recap: Top 12 contestants set

Spoiler alert: This story contains details from Monday night's live broadcast of The Voice.

And then there were 12. Voices, that is.

NBC's The Voice whittled down its final group of contenders to 12 from 20 Monday night in Season 11's first live show.

And on the eve of Election Day, The Voice used real-time voting to let  viewers pick their favorites via Twitter and the Voice app as the episode was airing. Two fan favorites were chosen by popular votes for teams coached by Adam Levine, Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys and Blake Shelton. Each coach then chose a third artist from their team.

Even The Voice Is Starting to Look Like Trump’s America

Catching up with season 11 of The Voice in my post-election haze has been an unusually painful experience. The singing contest — of which I am an unabashed fan precisely because of its message of inclusivity and diversity, built into the show through its blind auditions — has started its live rounds, which turns the decision-making over to America. And disappointingly but perhaps not surprisingly, seven of the nine people voted off so far happen to be women, people of color, or both.

The big purge was the Monday before the election, when the show introduced "live eliminations," meaning each team would be winnowed down from five to three members in real time, minutes after the artists had performed. The top two on each team automatically went through, then the coaches — old-timers Adam Levine and Blake Shelton, and newcomers Alicia Keys and Miley Cyrus — could save one contestant.

The red chairs return! Channel Nine has confirmed that The Voice Australia will return in 2017 for its sixth season with Delta Goodrem and Seal as judges Sonia Kruger is also back on board as the show's host but there is no word yet as to the future of former judges The Madden Brothers or Ronan Keating.

Jessie J announced halfway through this year's series that she will not be returning for a third stint on the show.
